Innowise helped modernize SMART/LAB’s e-mobility platform by enhancing its billing, payment, transaction management, and reporting capabilities.
faster billing and payment processing

SMART/LAB Innovationsgesellschaft mbH is a leading German e-mobility software provider that delivers charging infrastructure management, billing, and roaming solutions for energy providers and charging point operators across Europe.
To support its growing network of charging providers and EV drivers, SMART/LAB needed to overcome several challenges related to billing, payments, and platform scalability.
To help SMART/LAB support a growing network of charging providers, Innowise modernized the platform’s billing and payment ecosystem. The solution enables operators to offer subscription-based charging services, simplifies payments for EV drivers, and provides better visibility into financial operations.
One of the key enhancements was the introduction of a subscription billing module that enables charging providers and EV drivers to establish long-term charging contracts.
Instead of relying solely on one-time charging sessions, drivers can now subscribe to charging plans that best match their charging habits. The platform allows providers to configure flexible pricing models based on operators, roaming partners, charging point groups, or individual charging stations. Drivers can easily compare available offers, subscribe to a plan, and manage their contracts through the web or mobile application.
Once a contract is activated, users gain access to subscription details, transaction history, invoices, and refund information from a single interface. The new functionality also enables providers to introduce loyalty programs, allowing drivers to earn bonuses and redeem them for future charging sessions.
As a result, SMART/LAB can support a broader range of business models while offering charging providers greater flexibility in designing commercial offerings.
One of the project’s key objectives was to simplify the payment experience for EV drivers while reducing the operational effort required to manage payment-related issues.
We redesigned the payment workflow by introducing OneClick payments, enabling users to securely save their payment methods and complete future charging sessions without repeatedly entering card details. In addition, the platform now supports card-free charging, allowing drivers to authenticate and start charging directly through the mobile application instead of using physical RFID cards.
To complement these improvements, we implemented an automated cashback mechanism. If a charging session cannot be completed successfully, users can request a refund directly through the platform, with reimbursement processed within approximately 20 minutes. This functionality improves customer satisfaction while reducing the workload for support teams.
To help SMART/LAB manage its growing charging network more efficiently, Innowise strengthened the platform’s billing, reporting, and administrative capabilities.
We enhanced the platform’s PAYONE integration by introducing automatic invoice generation and streamlining billing workflows. This allows SMART/LAB and its charging providers to create invoices and billing reports more efficiently while reducing manual financial operations.
To provide greater transparency, we redesigned the reporting module. Charging providers can generate reports on contracts, charging sessions, and transactions for selected time periods, providers, and charging points, giving them better visibility into business performance. At the same time, EV drivers can easily access their transaction history, payment statuses, invoices, and refund information directly through the platform.
We also improved platform administration by introducing detailed payment monitoring and notifications. Administrators can track every stage of the payment process, quickly identify failed transactions, and determine where an error occurred, significantly reducing troubleshooting time.
Finally, we optimized the accounting workflows for non-integrated charging providers by standardizing partner IDs and charging point data. This simplifies partner onboarding, improves data consistency, and enables SMART/LAB to continue expanding its charging network more efficiently.
The most rewarding part of this project was transforming a complex billing ecosystem into a seamless user experience. We focused on simplifying payments, improving financial transparency, and giving both charging providers and EV drivers the tools they need to manage charging services with confidence.
