Challenge: Receiving information from sensors via an Apple CarPlay/Android Auto app

Our client produces and distributes a broad variety of car condition monitoring hardware that can track various information like tire pressure, location, mileage, etc.This information can be used by service providers for a better understanding of malfunctions and their possible causes as well as for the drivers to track their vehicle condition and timely perform maintenance.Our client has come up with the idea of an application for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto devices that would allow users to view the information from installed hardware in a convenient way. Also, the solution should provide drivers with access to the data on the go without the need for getting distracted from driving.

Solution: Aggregating and visualizing information from sensors with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications

Innowise has built an application that aggregates the information from the installed sensors, visualizes it, and gives drivers access to information both manually and via the AI voice assistant.

Data gathering module

All the data is collected via the application developed by our software engineers. It’s possible thanks to the capabilities of special wireless adapters (dongles) compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Dashboard

The main part of the app is the dashboard which shows all the information gathered via installed sensors. Users can switch between various tabs devoted to different parameters like tire pressure, mileage, and fuel consumption, etc.Via the dashboard, users can add new and manage existing sensors, and manage the voice assistant.

Voice assistant

To prevent drivers from being distracted while moving and creating dangerous situations, our software engineers have implemented the AI voice assistant that responds to commands and can voice the requested parameters. With its help, drivers can switch between sensor tabs, manage them, and set special event reminders (e.g., engine oil replacement, tire change, etc.).

Process

Due to project specifics, we have selected Agile as a software development methodology, conducting daily stand-up meetings, bi-weekly Sprint overviews, and retrospectives to analyze the progress. We used Jira and Confluence for tracking tasks and storing project information, held the meetings and overall communication with the client in Microsoft Teams.The client had a clear vision of the solution, and Innowise was to develop the solution according to it. We decomposed large parts of the project into smaller tasks for easier development and progress tracking. After several tasks were completed, our quality assurance engineers tested the solution’s compliance with the project requirements.
