Innowise upgraded the client’s proprietary desktop app with an FHIR-based integration gateway to connect their diagnostic software with FHIR-enabled EHR systems.
were needed to complete all integrations
FIM Medical is a French company specializing in the development and supply of medical screening devices used in preventive medicine and occupational health programs. These devices generate critical patient data that supports timely and informed medical decisions.
Although FIM Medical already had integrations with several Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, most of them relied on ad-hoc protocols. This made data flow less consistent and harder to manage. Our main task was to implement a standardized FHIR-based integration gateway to ensure more reliable data exchange across EHR systems used by FIM Medical customers.
Innowise demonstrated strong technical expertise in healthcare interoperability, structured project execution, and a clear understanding of clinical workflows. The result is a stable integration layer that simplifies the adoption of our devices in clinics using leading EHR systems. We value the professionalism and technical precision Innowise brought to this collaboration.
Innowise designed and implemented a custom integration gateway that acts as a secure bridge between FIM Medical’s proprietary diagnostic software and third-party EHR systems.
The developed custom integration gateway collects raw and binary data streams from multiple diagnostic devices and unifies them into a consistent internal structure. It then transforms this data into standardized FHIR resources, including Observations and DiagnosticReports.
Each report is labeled with the appropriate LOINC (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) code, a recognized standard for identifying medical tests, measurements, and observations.
Since the gateway was developed as a custom WPF-based application, we first validated its integration logic within a FHIR-first EHR environment, Meld. This allowed us to simulate real-world interoperability scenarios and test the full data lifecycle in a stable setting.
Within this environment, we verified the structure of FHIR resources, ensured correct mapping, validated LOINC coding, and tested patient search and reference linking workflows. This step helped us confirm that the data was structured and processed exactly as expected.
Once the integration logic was fully validated and stable, we extended the connection to third-party EHR systems through FHIR API as well as their custom APIs (e.g., AthenaHealth EHR), ensuring a smooth and predictable rollout into production environments.
The gateway facilitates direct connectivity with leading FHIR-compliant EHR platforms. It supports essential clinical workflows, including:
This allows healthcare professionals to access and manage diagnostic results directly within their existing EHR systems without manual re-entry.
To ensure secure and controlled data exchange, the gateway implements SMART on FHIR specifications and OAuth 2.0 authorization protocols. Through this framework, the system authenticates users and connected platforms, verifies identities, and manages access permissions before any clinical data is transmitted.
Working with FIM Medical resulted in a robust and production-ready FHIR integration layer that brings device-generated diagnostic data directly into leading EHR systems. It streamlines data exchange, reduces manual effort, and supports workflow-aligned clinical processes. It’s great to see how our joint efforts translated into a practical solution with real value for healthcare providers.

In three months, Innowise delivered a FHIR-compliant integration gateway that enabled automatic data exchange between FIM Medical’s diagnostic software and third-party EHR systems (e.g., AthenaHealth, EPIC).
Diagnostic results — including spirometry, audiometry, and visiometry data — are now automatically converted into FHIR-based resources with correct LOINC codes and securely transmitted to EHR systems. Medical staff can view results without switching systems or manually entering data.
As a result, FIM Medical improved data interoperability, reduced operational friction for healthcare providers, and made its devices easier to adopt in clinics using leading EHR platforms.
