Software engineers don’t always work on the same kinds of problems. Some spend years developing a single product, while others work directly with clients, adapting software to their systems, processes, and business requirements.
The second type of work is often associated with forward deployed engineers (FDEs). The role has been getting more attention, particularly among enterprise software and AI companies, as well as businesses looking to implement these technologies.
So, what does an FDE do, how much does the job overlap with traditional software engineering, and why would a company need one?
A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works closely with a client’s team to solve specific business problems through technology.
Unlike engineers who spend most of their time developing a company’s core product (or build custom software for clients, as we do at Innowise), FDEs are typically more involved in the client’s day-to-day operations. They learn how the business works, identify technical constraints, and figure out which technologies can solve the problem most effectively.
Say a company wants to automate invoice processing. An FDE would first look at how the whole process works and decide which technologies make sense for each step. For example, AI could extract information from invoices, RPA could handle repetitive tasks, and API integrations could transfer data to the accounting system. Some steps might not need AI at all.
Instead of building the entire solution straight away, the FDE could use AI-assisted coding to put together a quick prototype and test it on a small batch of invoices. If it works, they can refine the solution, add the necessary integrations, and prepare it for wider use.
This requires solid software engineering skills, experience with system integrations, and the ability to make technical decisions independently. FDEs also need to understand business requirements and communicate with people who don’t necessarily have a technical background.
And their job doesn’t end once the code works. They also check whether the solution performs reliably and saves the company time.
Both roles require strong programming skills, and there’s quite a bit of overlap between them. In fact, an FDE is a type of software engineer.
The main differences are usually the scope of responsibility, involvement in business decisions, and how the engineer approaches the work.
Here’s a more detailed comparison.
| Software engineer (SWE) | Forward deployed engineer (FDE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Huvudmål | Build, maintain, and improve software products | Solve specific clients’ problems using most suitable software |
| Primärt fokus | Product functionality, architecture, performance, and maintainability | Business requirements, prototypes, implementation, integration, testing and measurable outcomes |
| Approach to tasks | Often works with requirements defined by product owners, analysts, or architects | Helps define requirements, evaluates possible solutions, and proposes how to implement them |
| Självständighet | Depends on seniority and team structure; may work within an established architecture | Usually expected to make implementation decisions and take ownership of a specific solution |
| Typical responsibilities | Develop features, write tests, fix bugs, review code, improve infrastructure | Analyze business processes, design solutions, build custom functionality, integrate systems, deploy, and optimize |
| Use of AI | May use AI assistants for coding, testing, debugging, and documentation | In AI-native FDE teams, AI-assisted coding and workflow automation are actively used to accelerate delivery |
| Who they work with | Engineering, QA, design, product teams, and sometimes clients | Client stakeholders, business users, engineers, and product teams |
| Projektomfattning | Often product- or feature-focused | Usually centered on solving a business challenge, automating processes, or improving operational efficiency |
| Mätetal för framgång | Software quality, reliability, performance, maintainability, and delivery | Business KPIs, implementation speed, adoption, quality, and operating costs |
One difference worth discussing separately is AI-assisted development.
Today, software engineers can use Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and other AI tools regardless of their role. Being an FDE doesn’t automatically mean using AI more often than a traditional developer.
However, in an AI-enabled FDE model, there’s a strong emphasis on finding opportunities to automate development work. Engineers may use AI to generate routine code, create tests, prepare documentation, or prototype features faster. They still need to review the results and handle complex engineering decisions themselves.
Does this mean FDEs are more advanced than software engineers? Not necessarily. These are different specializations, and both can involve complex engineering work.
It’s also worth mentioning that the responsibilities aren’t always strictly separated. Software engineers can work directly with clients, while FDEs can contribute improvements to the core product. The exact boundaries depend on how a company organizes its engineering teams.
FDEs usually join an existing client team and get involved in everything from understanding the business problem to implementing and improving the solution.
But what makes their approach different from a regular development process?
At Innowise, our AI-focused FDE approach starts with one defined use case, access to the required data, and an internal project owner. For suitable projects, we aim to start implementation within 1–2 weeks and demonstrate measurable results by weeks 4–6. The actual timeline depends on the project’s complexity and existing infrastructure.
FDEs can work on all kinds of software projects, but AI implementation is one area where their skills come in particularly handy. Here are a few examples of AI solutions they can help businesses implement.
| Business area | Example AI solution | Potential benefit | Business outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kundtjänst | AI copilot or chatbot | Faster responses, higher customer satisfaction | Lower support costs, improved customer retention |
| Kunskapshantering | Smart search with source citations | Less time spent searching, more accurate answers | Higher employee productivity, lower information retrieval costs |
| Verksamhet | AI agents and workflow automation | Less manual work, faster processes | Lower operational costs, increased processing capacity |
| Försäljning & marknadsföring | Lead assistant or personalization | Higher conversion, shorter lead processing time | Potential revenue growth, improved sales efficiency |
| Analytics & insights | Forecasting, summaries, recommendations | Faster decisions, lower analysis costs | Reduced reporting expenses, better resource allocation |
| Compliance & governance | AI monitoring and policy enforcement | Lower compliance risks, greater transparency | Reduced compliance workload, lower exposure to costly violations |
A company doesn't necessarily need an FDE for every software development project.
If you're building a conventional application with well-defined requirements and an established development team, traditional software engineers may already cover everything.
But there are situations where having an FDE on your team can make a real difference. Check if any of these sound familiar.
If you've checked several boxes, involving an FDE might be worth considering. Especially if your project requires plenty of customization, complex integrations, or close cooperation between technical and business teams.
Forward deployed engineers and traditional software engineers have a lot in common. Both write code, solve technical problems, and build software that needs to work reliably.
The difference lies mainly in their responsibilities and approach to solving problems. FDEs tend to have greater involvement in business and defining the solution, choosing technologies, and working directly with the client throughout implementation.
AI-assisted development can make this approach more efficient, particularly when engineers know which tasks are worth automating and which require careful manual work.
For businesses, the value of an FDE comes down to having an engineer who can understand the problem, make the necessary technical decisions, and follow the solution through to measurable results.
Tell us what you’re working on, and we’ll help you figure out how our engineers can tackle your challenges.
